Discovering Science All Around Us

Hi, I’m Petra! have been so blessed to travel the world experiencing the beauty and wonder of our planet. I have in turns wanted to be a marine biologist, ornithologist, zoologist, and more recently a quantum biologist. I love observing and researching the intersection of science and our natural world. Often, there’s more to nature than meets the eye. My other hobbies include tennis, golf, saxophone, piano, wildlife photography, and art.

  • It’s so amazing to see quantum biology in the real world (Ba’a Atoll, Maldives). When you look closer at the natural world, you see all of these fascinating behaviors that rely on the chaotic world of quantum physics! For example, these migratory seabirds (black-naped terns) use quantum entanglement (radical electron pairs) to navigate using Earth’s…

  • Here I am snorkeling with giant manta rays in Hanifaru Bay, a protected UNESCO Biosphere in Ba’a Atoll, Maldives. Every monsoon season, hundreds to thousands will congregate there to feed on plankton driven there by the currents. Did you know that mantas are the most intelligent fish in the world and have the largest brain…

  • Quantum biology is so incredible because it proves that life can emerge from seemingly chaotic environments. Living cells have somehow evolved nano structures that utilize quantum anomalies to survive. Isn’t life just incredible? Reef-building corals host symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae rely on quantum coherence during photosynthesis. This efficiency allows Maldivian reefs to thrive!…

  • Even the humble sea cucumber is a lesson in science! Coral reef invertebrates such as this black-spotted sea cucumber can change their skin from soft to stiff in just a few seconds as a defense mechanism. They do this by controlling tiny protein fibers and chemical bonds in their skin. Scientists use this amazing ability…
